Difference Between Omnidirectional and Unidirectional Microphones

The main difference lies in their pickup patterns:

• Omnidirectional microphones pick up sound evenly from all around the microphone capsule.
• Unidirectional microphones (such as cardioid or supercardioid) focus on capturing sound primarily from one direction, minimizing noise from other directions.

Choosing between them depends on your application needs. If you want to capture sound from multiple sources or directions, omnidirectional is preferred. For isolating sound from a specific source, unidirectional microphones are better.
